Building a Community Space
A new building is being proposed for the overflow parking area, to enhance fellowship opportunities for our congregation and create outreach opportunities to our community. The building would be designed to accommodate congregational and community activities and provide an indoor space to store our church van.
Potential uses by the congregation include a space for Sunday School activities, after school clubs for children, Youth Group gatherings, Vacation Bible School, and special events.
The building could also be used by community groups such as the local Christian Young Life high school and middle school groups.
The building would have large roll-up doors and a covered area creating a space for activities that might be part indoor and part outdoor such as our live nativity and picnics. The design also includes a half-court basketball floor and a small kitchen, bathrooms, showers and storage space.
UPDATE: November 9,2022
Bethany’s congregation approved to move forward with the construction of the new Multi-Purpose Building in the lot adjacent to the main church building. Due to Covid and subsequent inflation, the building’s cost has risen to $1.6m. The project will be completed in phases as monies are received to fund the building in its entirety. Final engineering and permitting are expected to take place before the end of 2022 so construction can begin first quarter of 2023. The first phase will be site preparation that includes relocating a city-owned sewer line that runs thru the property so the new building could be moved to the eastern side of the property.
A one-bedroom apartment in the loft area above the restrooms has been added to the design. This apartment will allow Bethany to provide housing for short-term visiting Missionaries, Intern Pastors, or church guests. The building will include a half-court gym, men’s and women’s restrooms with showers/lockers, a semi-commercial kitchen, and covered patio space for outdoor events. Bethany hopes to have the building completed before Christmas 2023. There will be fundraising events during 2023. If you would like to take part in the project and help with the funding, please feel free to donate to Bethany Lutheran Church, Multi-Purpose Building Project, 451-34th St, Astoria, Oregon 97103.
